Here we are, halfway done with the preseason and the biggest storylines every year are the quarterbacks, or so it seems and this year is no different. In one corner, you have Andrew Luck of the Colts, who has been maybe the most hyped quarterback since Peyton Manning, who he is replacing. Then you have the Heisman winning quarterback out of Baylor Robert Griffin III for the Redskins and now the Redskins have their first quarterback to be excited about in a long time, while ownership is willing to dish out the bucks to help them compete in the rugged NFC East. Ryan Tannehill, the eighth overall pick of the Dolphins in 2012 has taken the starting spot from incumbent Matt Moore and the injured David Garrard (who was the starter going into the preseason) and Brandon Weeden has beaten out (as expected) Colt McCoy out of the starting spot with the Browns. But they are not the only ones. Nick Foles has looked sharp as Michael Vick has gotten injured twice in 2 preseason games and Brock Osweiler is being groomed as Peyton Manning’s replacement in John Elway’s eyes. Football season is right around the corner and here is my top 10 Rookie QB Rankings going into the 2012 season.
RK Name Team College
1 Andrew Luck Colts Stanford
2 Robert Griffin III Redskins Baylor
3 Ryan Tannehill Dolphins Texas A&M
4 Brandon Weeden Browns Oklahoma State
5 Nick Foles Eagles Arizona
6 Russell Wilson Seahawks Wisconsin
7 Brock Osweiler Broncos Arizona State
8 Chandler Harnish Colts Northern Illinois
9 Kirk Cousins Redskins Michigan State
10 Ryan Lindley Cardinals San Diego State
Russell Wilson has opened some eyes as a third round pick of the Seahawks with 2 comeback wins in 2 preseason games. While he is facing second team defenses, he has pushed Matt Flynn and is getting the start for the third preseason game. He has a high Football IQ and is not afraid to run for yards if noone is open downfield and is not Pete Carroll’s typical quarterback, but his college experience in the West Coast offense and the Wisconsin offense should help his transition as the Seahawks have a very similar playbook, almost of hybrid of those 2. Kirk Cousins and Chandler Harnish are both behind their teams’ first round quarterbacks and Ryan Lindley is competing for a spot behind John Skelton and Kevin Kolb for the Cardinals.
It seems for every Peyton Manning, there’s a JaMarcus Russell or a Ryan Leaf. Quarterbacks are as much of a guarantee as a pitcher drafted in the MLB First Year Player Draft. So much goes into it, some things scouts don’t see, but NFL teams make their picks and they have the guys in the system, so when their time comes, they’re as ready as possible.
